AI governance is how an organisation decides where AI may be used, sets the limits, and keeps a record it can stand behind. It is moving from a nice-to-have to something customers, boards and regulators ask about directly.

What AI governance means
AI governance is the set of policies, roles, risk assessments and controls that decide how AI is used across an organisation and prove it is being used responsibly. It answers the questions a board now asks: which AI systems do we run, who owns each, what risk does each carry, and what is a person required to approve.
ISO/IEC 42001, published in 2023, is the first international management-system standard for AI, an AI management system or AIMS. It does for AI what ISO 27001 does for information security: a documented, risk-based system for governing AI across its lifecycle, which can be certified by an accredited body.
In Australia, the Voluntary AI Safety Standard sets out ten guardrails for organisations deploying AI, and the government has consulted on mandatory guardrails for AI in high-risk settings. The AI Ethics Principles sit alongside both. Together they are the reference points an Australian organisation is measured against.
Who needs AI governance

What good AI governance requires
The elements ISO 42001 and the AU guardrails have in common:
An inventory of AI in use
A current list of the AI systems in the organisation, sourced from telemetry rather than a staff survey, each with a named owner and a risk rating. Self-reported AI use is always an undercount.
Risk and impact assessment
For each AI use, an assessment of the risk it carries and its impact on people, proportionate to how the system is used. This is the spine of both ISO 42001 and the AU guardrails.
Policy, roles and human oversight
Written limits on what AI may and may not do, who is accountable, and where a human must approve before an AI-proposed action takes effect.
A record you could produce
Evidence of how AI has actually been used, retained and producible for a customer, board or regulator, over a period you did not choose in advance.
