Set up AWS Japan failover for your AI
Add AWS Japan (Tokyo) as a failover region so ORCA keeps responding if your primary region is degraded. Optional, admin-controlled, logged and audited.
ORCA's AI runs in your primary region, Australia. Adding a failover region means ORCA can keep responding if your primary region is degraded, by automatically routing to AWS Japan (Tokyo) until the primary region recovers. Failover is optional and controlled by your tenant administrator. It only engages during a degradation, every failover that routes data outside your primary region is logged and audited, and if you would rather stay in Australia only, you do not need to do anything.
Antes de empezar
- A tenant administrator account. AI provider failover is a tenant-wide setting.
- About two minutes.
Paso a paso
- 1
Open Settings
Click the Settings gear in the bottom-left corner to open your account preferences.
- 2
Open Tenant settings
Under Organisation, click Tenant. Failover is a tenant-wide setting, so an administrator manages it.
- 3
Add AWS Japan (Tokyo) as a failover
In the AI Provider Failover section, your primary region (Australia) is listed first. Click AWS Japan (Tokyo) to add it as a backup provider. It only takes over if your primary region is degraded, and every failover is logged and audited.
- 4
Save your changes
Click Save Changes to turn the failover on.
- 5
See it on your model (optional)
Open Opti Assist, click the model name to open the model selector, then More models. Each model shows its region: ORCA-Standard runs on AWS Bedrock in Australia, with AWS Japan (Tokyo) ready as its failover.
Solución de problemas
- I want to stay in Australia only.
- Then you do not need to do anything. Failover is off unless an administrator adds a failover region, and your AI runs only in your primary region, Australia.
- Who can turn failover on?
- A tenant administrator. It is a tenant-wide setting under Settings, then Organisation, then Tenant, in the AI Provider Failover section.
- Will I know when ORCA fails over?
- Failover engages only when your primary region is degraded, and every failover that routes data outside your primary region is logged and audited, so there is a record each time it happens.
- Is failover permanent, or only during an issue?
- It is a backup. It engages only while your primary region is degraded, so your AI normally runs in your primary region, Australia.
Preguntas frecuentes
- What does having Japan as my failover mean for my data?
- During a failover, AI requests are processed in AWS's Japan (Tokyo) region instead of your primary Australian region, until your primary region recovers. Japan is a jurisdiction with strong, compatible privacy protections, which is why we chose it.
- Why Japan?
- Australia and Japan both take part in the Global Cross-Border Privacy Rules framework, an internationally recognised system for cross-border data protection, and Japan's privacy law (the APPI) is independently recognised as providing a high standard of protection. So when failover engages, your data stays under a strong and compatible set of protections.
- Does my data leave Australia when failover is on?
- Only during an actual failover, and only while your primary region is degraded. If your primary region is healthy, your AI runs in Australia. Every failover that routes data outside your primary region is logged and audited.
- Do I have to turn this on?
- No. Failover is optional. If you would rather stay in Australia only, you do not need to do anything, and a tenant administrator can add a failover region at any time.
