Don't Rent Your Resilience

This week proved that there is danger in depending on a single AI provider. That model can be switched off without warning. All your history, wiped.

On Friday, the US government issued an export-control directive ordering one of the world's leading AI companies to cut off its two most advanced models for any foreign national, anywhere on earth, inside the United States or out.

Here is the part worth sitting with. To comply, the company had to switch those models off for everyone. Not just foreign nationals. Everyone. Because no provider can reliably prove who is a US citizen and who is not. The only safe way to obey an order aimed at foreign nationals was to pull access for the entire customer base, worldwide, within hours. American or not, you were locked out. One model had launched only three days earlier.

This is not really a story about Anthropic, who by every account is fighting to reverse it, and I hope they win. It is not a story about avoiding AI. Almost every business runs on AI. That is not the headline risk.

The risk is concentration. When your business depends on a single AI model, you inherit a single point of failure. That model can be restricted or switched off at short notice, by an authority outside your control, with little explanation and no appeal. This is not about one country or one government. Any single point of control is a vulnerability, wherever it sits. Access is not ownership. And resilience you rent from one provider is resilience you can lose overnight.

We expect more of this, across more of the high-tech industry, as these models, or even cloud services, become national-security infrastructure. If your operations depend on one model staying switched on, that is now an organisation-wide risk.

Here is what we believe.

Your compliance, your security, your AI productivity should never hang on the goodwill of one vendor or one government. It should be sovereign. It should be resilient. And it should meet you where you already work, not force you onto someone else's platform.

That is what we built.

We built ORCA on Microsoft 365 first, because we refused to compromise on security. Then we did the hard thing. We worked out how to deliver that same security on Google. Today ORCA runs natively across both business and personal accounts. Those are the two platforms that around 95% of the business world runs on. We also now support Microsoft and Google consumer accounts, making up about 80% of users globally. We meet customers where they are, on the tools they already trust, and we bring AI productivity and creativity to them quickly.

The intelligence underneath is built the same way, with no single point of failure. ORCA runs on three of the leading AI models, not one. If any single model is restricted or switched off, anywhere, for any reason, ORCA keeps running on the others and your team barely notices. We did not bet your business on one model staying available. That is the difference between renting your resilience and owning it.

And we did not stay home. ORCA is not just an Australian story any more. We have launched across India, the UK and Europe, Mexico, the United States and New Zealand.

The market is answering. We have grown past 1,500 active user licences, doubling month on month.

We are building the opposite of fragile. Sovereign by design. Resilient by default. Available to everyone, everywhere, on the platforms they already use. No single government switch turns us off. No single vendor outage takes you down.

If this week made you think harder about what your business is standing on, good. That is the right instinct. Don't rent your resilience. Own it.
